Fly direct, almost always
Connecting flights nearly double per-passenger emissions because takeoff and landing are the most fuel-intensive parts of a flight. A two-leg trip emits roughly 30-60% more than a single direct flight covering the same distance. Direct flights are also usually faster, more reliable, and less stressful.
Choose economy
Business class roughly triples per-passenger emissions because of the floor area each seat occupies. First class is worse still. The carbon math is straightforward: a single business class seat carries the same fuel weight as 2.5-3 economy seats. Choosing economy on a 10-hour flight has more impact than most travelers’ yearly recycling efforts.

Slow transport is often where the most interesting conversations happen. The seatmate on a six-hour train. The bus driver who has the patience to chat. The person at the café during a long layover. These low-pressure encounters are where travel’s randomness shows up best, and where you collect the stories you tell years later.
The economics of sustainable transport almost always favor the traveler. Trains booked in advance are usually cheaper than equivalent flights once you include airport transfers, baggage fees, and food. The cost savings often exceed the time cost of choosing rail.
